Rakuten Global SIM
One of the strongest international competitors in the ECommerce market to Amazon is Rakuten. I was hired to work overseas at their Tokyo headquarters as a Senior UX Design Architect with their Mobile Department resolving complex architectural flows and providing guidance for features. Took part in research and usability.
One of the largest projects I led UX was with the Global SIM project. Traveled to Montreal in collaboration with a SIM production company to create the most affordable mobile SIM product for the Japanese market.
The most difficult tasks were; 1. create an intuative way to instruct users to switch-out their SIM and replace with the Global SIM without having users read the directions, 2. As Rakuten was an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), there were government laws with tough restrictions over MNO (mobile network operator) such as NTT, AU by KDDI and Softbank. There were a lot of workarounds to accomplish our goals which delayed our release. Eventually, we launched without a few major features.
